AtkinsRéalis starts licensing process for Candu reactors in U.S.

MONTREAL — AtkinsRéalis Group Inc. says it has formally submitted a notice of intent to begin the licensing process for its Candu nuclear reactor technology in the United States.

The company says the filing with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is the start of the formal pre-application engagement.

AtkinsRéalis chief executive Ian Edwards say it marks a critical milestone in the development of Candu’s international market.

Demand for electricity has soared with the growth of power-hungry data centres that are required for artificial intelligence.

AtkinsRéalis says it’s engaging with U.S. utilities, state governments and prospective anchor power purchasers to evaluate potential opportunities.

The company owns the exclusive commercial rights to the Candu technology.
