Winter storm to linger into weekend with 60 cm of snow possible in some areas

The first major snow storm has touched down in Simcoe County. Here's a look at what the treacherous day entailed.

The first major blast of a multi-day winter storm slammed Simcoe County Friday morning, creating havoc on the roads for motorists.

Environment Canada reports snowfall amounts could reach upwards of 60 centimetres for Barrie, Collingwood, and surrounding areas, as the system lingers into Saturday.

“The lake effect activity should diminish in intensity later tonight or Saturday morning,” the weather office noted.

Motorists are told to expect “extremely hazardous travel conditions” with poor to near-zero visibility at times as intense snowfall blankets the roads.

“Take your time and stay safe on the roads,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in a video posted to social media. Schmidt highlighted the weather could make driving challenging across the region. “Drive safely, keep your hands on the wheel, keep your eyes on the road, your mind on the task of driving.”

Police also urge motorists to ensure vehicles are completely clear of snow before heading out, including the roof, hood, lights and all windows. Not properly removing snow and ice from your vehicle can result in a hefty fine.

“If you must drive, brush off your entire vehicle, pack an emergency kit, plan ahead and avoid non-essential travel,” OPP shared.
