Township unveils new roadway as tribute to beloved sports champion

The newly unveiled Dr. Talbot Way in Tay Township is unveiled on Nov. 14, 2025.

Tay Township is putting a familiar name back in the spotlight, giving residents a new way to remember a man who spent decades looking out for local kids.

The community officially named the new roadway into Talbot Park ‘Dr. Talbot Way,’ a tribute unveiled this month to honour the lasting impact of Dr. Charles Talbot.

The new road provides another entrance to the park in Port McNicoll, but township officials say it represents much more than improved access.

It’s meant to serve as a permanent reminder of Dr. Talbot’s commitment to youth sports and his belief that no child should be left on the sidelines.

“We are honoured to celebrate Dr. Talbot’s legacy with the installation of a ‘Dr. Talbot Way’ street sign. His unwavering dedication to creating opportunities for young people in sports truly reflects the spirit of a community builder,” said Mayor Ted Walker.

According to the township, Talbot spent years ensuring local children had a fair shot at playing the sports they loved. He volunteered with the Midland Minor Hockey Association, served as team doctor for the Midland Flyers in the 1960s, and created a minor hockey league at the Midland Arena for boys from Port McNicoll. When talented young players couldn’t afford to participate, officials say he stepped in personally, paying for their equipment and covering the cost of summer hockey programs.

His support extended to baseball as well. Dr. Talbot purchased uniforms and trophies for local teams and played a central role in developing the ball diamond that would eventually become Talbot Park. The Port McNicoll Lions Club later named the park in his honour.

In 2000, Talbot was posthumously inducted into the Midland Sports Hall of Fame.
