Snowmobiler, 60, airlifted with critical injuries after Lake Simcoe crash

Emergency crews mounted a coordinated rescue Tuesday afternoon after a snowmobiler was critically injured in a crash on Lake Simcoe.

Air Ornge confirmed to CTV News that one of its helicopters landed in a baseball field at Bay Street and Oro-Medonte Line 2 South.

According to police, officers were assisting Georgian emergency services following reports of an injured man on the ice, believed to be near the middle of the bay, not far from Line 3.

Fire crews rushed onto the lake, tracked down the man and provided treatment before transporting him off the ice.

Air Ornge said the patient, a man in his 60s, was then flown to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto with critical injuries.

Police members of the Orillia OPP detachment also responded to the afternoon scene. It remains unclear how the initial crash occurred.
