Shovels in the ground for Transition Centre at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden

An historic tradition; the Freedom of the City Parade is celebrated in Barrie as part of CFB Borden's 110th anniversary.

New services for soldiers transitioning to and from active duty are under construction.

The Department of National Defence (DND) is investing in new facilities to better support military members and their families as they transition back to duty or to civilian life.

“These new Transition Centres represent our commitment to support Canadian Armed Forces members and their families with modern, sustainable facilities. They will provide the space and resources needed to support a smooth and dignified transition process,” said the Honourable David J. McGuinty, Minister of National Defence.

New centres are being created to centralize transition services, including workspaces, reception areas, and meeting spaces.

“Transition can be one of the most significant and complex periods in a Canadian Armed Forces member’s career,” said Brig.-Gen. Serge Ménard, CAF Transition Group Commander.

“These new Transition Centres are designed to bring services and partners together in one place, providing members and their families with coordinated, personalized, and accessible support throughout their transition journey,” said Ménard.

The planned facility at CFB Borden will cost approximately $37 million and offers a modern facility covering more than 1,200 square metres to support round 40 personnel.

Construction will continue through 2027, with the new facility expected to reach full operational capability by June 2028.

Two additional Transition Centres will be located at 3 Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton in Alberta; and Canadian Forces Base Shilo in Manitoba.
