Severe thunderstorm watch, toonie-sized hail issued for parts of Simcoe County

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of Simcoe County.

On Saturday evening, Environment Canada issued a statement indicating that potential thunderstorms could produce strong wind gusts and large hail. Hail is anticipated to be approximately the size of a toonie.

As the evening grows darker, local utility outages are possible. “When thunder roars, go indoors. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” stated the national weather agency.

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favorable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind, or rain.

Looking ahead: A mix of sun and cloud is expected on Sunday with a 30 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon and another potential risk of a thunderstorm.
