Police remind residents fireworks are allowed during Diwali festivities

Fireworks are permitted in the City of Barrie on specific days, but there are rules and restrictions.

Police in Barrie say they received several calls Monday night about fireworks being set off, and remind residents they were “part of Diwali festivities which is a designated holiday for this type of activity.”

Under the City’s Regulatory Matters Bylaw, fireworks can only be set off on select designated occasions, including Diwali, unless a special permit is acquired.

However, there are rules residents must follow while celebrating.

“People are not permitted to set off any fireworks in, on, or into any roadway or park or on or into any other private property for which permission has not been granted,” the City states.

In addition, the Noise Bylaw prohibits fireworks from being set off between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

The City states that while fireworks are a festive part of many celebrations, they can also be dangerous and should be handled responsibly.

“Every year, thousands of Canadians, mostly children, are hurt by consumer fireworks such as sparklers and firecrackers. Fireworks also cause many fires,” the City noted.
