Penetanguishene man dead in snowmobile crash on Georgian Bay

A 62-year-old man from Penetanguishene is dead following a snowmobile crash on the ice in Georgian Bay Sunday evening.

Southern Georgian Bay police responded to a 911 call around 7:15 p.m. near the southern tip of Beausoleil Island, around 2.7 kilometres from the mainland.

Officers say the snowmobile operator lost control and was ejected onto the ice. A person riding with the victim remained at the crash and contacted emergency services.

Simcoe County Paramedic Services, police, local fire departments and an OPP helicopter responded to the area.

Police say a civilian air boat was used to reach the remote location, and the injured man was taken to shore where paramedics attempted life-saving measures before taking him to the hospital.

The 62-year-old man was later pronounced dead.

Authorities say alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The OPP Technical Traffic Investigations unit is assisting the ongoing investigation.

Police are warning the public that warmer spring temperatures are making ice conditions dangerous and unpredictable. Snowmobilers and anyone considering travelling on frozen water are urged to stay off the ice.
