OPP urge drivers to stay off closed highways

Simcoe County experiences extreme weather causing road closures, cancellations, collisions, and emergency alerts.

The Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are urging motorists to refrain from driving on closed highways.

They are reminding the public that driving on a closed highway not only puts lives at risk and delays reopening time, but it’s illegal. Further, they explained highway closures are put in place for safety during severe weather, collisions, or emergency operations. They reiterated that it’s in the public’s best interest to abide by the signs.

According to the Highway Traffic Act, driving on a closed highway could result in a fine of $110 and three demerit points. It could also impact insurance, meaning claims could be denied if an incident happens on a closed highway. And finally, drivers may have to make a court appearance.

In an email to CTV News on Tuesday afternoon, OPP said the tow queue list is into the hundreds. They also said OPP Snowmobile, ATV, Vessel Enforcement (SAVE) is out assisting stranded motorists. This means OPP officers are using snowmobiles to help officers already on scene of emergencies like collisions.

OPP are warning the public response time is very slow so motorists can expect a long wait to get the assistance needed.

In the meantime, OPP have some safety tips for those finding themselves stranded on the road:

If you are stuck on a roadway

• Stay in the vehicle
• Keep exhaust clear if the engine is running for heat. The tailpipe should be clear of snow and ice to prevent carbon monoxide buildup
• Run engine on and off but not constantly, in order to save the battery
• Use blankets and layers to keep warm
• Turn on hazard lights when the engine is running and tie a bright-coloured cloth on the antenna or door handle
• Call 911 for only emergencies and follow the direction of police and emergency crews

Deteriorating weather conditions and the harsh winter storm forced authorities to close many roads and highways Monday into Tuesday.

The message is clear: OPP are urging drivers to stay off closed roads or even better, stay home as conditions are treacherous due to slippery and snow-covered roads as well as zero visibility in spots from snow squalls.
