OPP targets aggressive drivers from the skies over Hwy 11, issues over 50 charges

Provincial police took to the sky over Highway 11 to target aggressive and impaired driving Thursday, resulting in dozens of charges over four hours.

According to police, the aerial enforcement focused mainly on commercial motor vehicles following too closely, which they say is the leading cause of serious collisions.

“Over 50 drivers were stopped,” OPP told CTV News. “Over 50 charges, including following too close were laid.”

The enforcement was a coordinated effort between the aerial team and ground units.

"Officers in the plane monitored traffic from above and relayed infractions in real time to frontline members positioned along the highway," OPP explained.

Police say the aircraft provides a unique vantage point to detect aggressive or dangerous driving behaviours that may be challenging to observe from the ground.

OPP says teams may fly overhead over the Thanksgiving Day long weekend as part of its broader traffic safety strategy.
