OPP investigate series of Caledon and Dufferin County extortion cases

Provincial police reported on Sunday that they are investigating a rising number of extortion cases in Caledon and Dufferin County dating back to late 2023.

According to the OPP, it has identified more than 45 cases that appear to follow a pattern of extortion, where suspects threaten victims with violence through phone calls or text messages if a large amount of money is not paid.

Police say the callers tell the victims that they know where they live or work, adding that the offences appear to be targeting members of the South-Asian community.

“Throughout 2024 and 2025, the OPP has investigated numerous weapons incidents where properties in the Caledon and Dufferin County areas have sustained property damage due to gunfire,” said OPP Sgt. Joe Brisebois in a news release. “Police believe these shootings are linked to threatening communications and extortion attempts.”

Investigators issued a reminder to residents and business owners that extortion is defined by the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre as ‘unlawfully obtaining money, property or services from a person, entity or institution through coercion.’

They add that extortionists are known to use high-pressure intimidation tactics to solicit money, and that potential victims should avoid replying and block the originating number.

The cases in Caledon and Dufferin County are being investigated by the OPP Central Region and the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

Those who receive threatening calls or messages are urged to report them to police immediately.
