Newmarket man arrested in armed robbery investigation

Police charged a Newmarket man in connection with multiple armed robberies.

Police have charged a man in connection with armed robberies that happened at two convenience stores in Newmarket just hours apart over the weekend.

York Regional police say a suspect armed with a hammer threatened an employee at a store on Main Street near Davis Drive around 1:40 a.m. Saturday, and fled with a quantity of cash and cigarettes.

Later that morning, around 9 a.m., police say the same suspect, this time armed with a knife, demanded cash from another store on Davis Drive.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Police say they identified the suspect as a 50-year-old Newmarket man, who was also wanted in connection with a robbery involving a food delivery driver earlier this month. He was arrested and charged with three counts of robbery with an offensive weapon.

Investigators believe the accused may have been responsible for other similar crimes and urge anyone with information to come forward.
