Man trapped in crevice returns to caves

Crews work to help a man trapped in a rock crevice in Singhampton, Ont.

A Clearview Township man who endured a harrowing night trapped in a crevice along the Bruce Trail was back at the scene on Wednesday.

Seth Rowe was rescued from the crevice on the Niagara escarpment just before 10 a.m. Sunday and on Wednesday he went back to get closure.

“I need some closure I think, this really happened, I was really down there for a long time,” says Rowe.

Rowe got stuck after falling into the deep crevice he was exploring. Rowe lives nearby and has been hiking in the area many times over the years.

Firefighters from Clearview Township, the City of Barrie and the City of Toronto all worked together to free Rowe after two hikers heard calls for help and called 9-1-1.

Professional caving guides familiar with the crevices at the Nottawasaga Bluffs say people out exploring should have proper equipment and know where to go. Advice Rowe was reiterating on Wednesday.

“If you are going to do it, do it with equipment, proper equipment and a friend, at least one friend and tell someone where you are,” adds Rowe.

Rowe will be turning 31 next week and plans are in the works to celebrate his birthday along with his successful rescue.
