From candy to crayons: Ways to make Halloween inclusive for all abilities

Halloween is getting more inclusive this year, with the Town of Aurora joining the Treat Accessibly movement to make sure every child can enjoy the tradition of trick-or-treating — no matter their abilities.

The grassroots initiative, launched by the Padulo family in 2017, has grown into a nationwide effort with more than 100,000 households across Canada taking part.

This year, Aurora is partnering with the campaign to help create accessible trick-or-treating.

Treat Accessibly encourages residents to think about how their set-up can be safe and welcoming for all children. Something as simple as placing a treat station at the end of the driveway or avoiding strobe lights can make a big difference, the organization states.

The town is providing free lawn signs to participants who register online, signaling to families their homes are part of the accessible trick-or-treating network. Signs can be picked up at the Aurora Family Leisure Complex.

Organizers say the goal is to remove barriers such as stairs and dark pathways, and to consider sensory-friendly environments. Tips also include keeping pets away from the front door, parking vehicles out of the way, and offering non-edible treats like stickers or crayons for children with dietary restrictions.

Residents can also check an online map to find accessible treat stations in Aurora on Halloween night.
