Driver, 18, accused of speeding 72 km/h over limit with several passengers on wet roads

An 18-year-old woman from Toronto is facing charges after police say she was speeding more than 70 kilometres per hour over the posted limit in Dufferin County with several young passengers.

According to provincial police, an officer clocked the vehicle travelling 152 kilometres per hour in the posted 80 km/h limit on Highway 10 in Melancthon Township with five young passengers - one of whom OPP says wasn’t buckled in.

“And all of this happened on wet roads,” OPP stated in a post on X. “This kind of reckless behaviour is completely unacceptable.”

Police say as a result of the offence, the young driver was charged with stunt driving, which comes with an immediate licence suspension and vehicle impoundment.

Additionally, the passenger was charged for not wearing a seatbelt.

“Driving is a privilege, not a right. It comes with responsibility, not only for your own life but for the lives of your passengers and everyone else on the road, especially in hazardous conditions like wet roads,” OPP continued.

“Please slow down. Buckle up. Drive responsibly. Save a life — maybe even your own," the police service concluded.
