Barrie ranked most dangerous city to drive in the province, according to MyChoice

Barrie's been name the most dangerous city to drive in in Ontario.

A Toronto-based insurance company has come out with the 10 safest and most dangerous cities for driving in Ontario.

And Barrie is coming out on top.

Barrie is considered the most dangerous city to drive in Ontario, according to MyChoice, replacing Brantford.

The insurance company says the change has been driven largely by increased accidents as opposed to infractions.

MyChoice used over 200,000 car insurance quotes since 2020 to gather information about highest and lowest levels of risk across the province in 2026. The results are based on weighted averages of accidents and infractions like distracted driving and speeding.

The company created a scoring system of zero to five with zero being the most dangerous and five being the safest.

Barrie scored 0.6 with 14.54 per cent of drivers with more than one accident on record, about one in seven. And 12.41 per cent of drivers have more than one infraction on record.

“Drivers can’t control the regional risk trends, but they can control how they drive,” says MyChoice CEO Aren Mirzaian. “Following the defensive driving principles, such as leaving extra space, slowing down in poor conditions, and minimizing distractions, remains one of the most effective ways to stay safe on the road. Winter tires are also a smart seasonal upgrade that can qualify you for an insurance discount.”

Another community in the Simcoe Muskoka region that was on the list for the most dangerous cities to drive was Bradford.

Toronto ranked as the safest city for driving with a score of 4.6.
