Barrie-area police honour fallen OPP Sgt. Brandon Malcolm with flags at half-mast

OPP Sgt. Brandon Malcolm, 33, has died following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 401 near Burnham Street North in Cobourg, Ont., on April 27, 2026.

Flags at Orillia Ontario Provincial Police Headquarters are lowered to half-mast Tuesday as police services across the community mourn the death of an OPP officer killed in the line of duty.

OPP Sgt. Brandon Malcolm, 33, died Monday evening after a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Highway 401 near Burnham Street North in Cobourg. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Malcolm is remembered as a “big guy with a big heart” who was dedicated to serving his community and beloved by his colleagues at the Northumberland Detachment.

Barrie Police Service says flags at its headquarters have been lowered, in honour of Malcolm and to recognize the National Day of Mourning, observed on April 28 to remember workers who have died or have been injured on the job.

Barrie police are offering their deepest condolences to Malcolm’s family, friends and colleagues. “His life and his service will not be forgotten.”

The service tells CTV News that Barrie officers will attend Malcolm’s funeral, standing with policing partners as they mourn the loss.

South Simcoe Police Service also shared its condolences, saying officers are deeply saddened by his death. “On behalf of South Simcoe Police, we send our heartfelt condolences to Sgt. Brandon Malcolm’s loved ones and the entire OPP family,” the service says. “We stand with you during this difficult time.”

“The loss of an officer in the line of duty has a profound impact that reaches far beyond the officer’s home service,” states South Simcoe police to CTV News. “Policing is a close‑knit profession, and when one officer is lost, it is felt collectively across services. These tragedies remind members of the inherent risks of the profession and can resurface grief from past losses, both personally and organizationally."

Barrie police also say leadership plays an important role to make sure members receive immediate and long-term support after traumatic events of this nature.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique called it a tremendous loss. “It is with profound sadness that I regretfully confirm that OPP Sgt. Brandon Malcolm was killed in the line of duty,” Carrique says. “We honour his service and bravery as we grieve this tremendous loss.”

According to OPP, Malcolm joined the force in June 2020 and spent his entire career with the Northumberland Detachment. He was also a accomplished and proud member of the OPP Golden Helmets.

Police describe him as a respected leader who fostered a supportive environment. “His quiet confidence, professionalism and strong work ethic made him an integral part of the OPP,” says the organization in a release.

OPP say they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Funeral arrangements are in the early stages and will be released as they become available.
