The Twin Brooks neighbourhood in south Edmonton will soon see a significant closure to one of its arterial roads as crews work on the Capital Line South LRT extension. Access to Twin Brooks at 12 Avenue and 111 Street will be closed for 10 weeks starting May 24 as Ledcor works to remove the existing roadway, soil and underground utilities, as well as civil drainage, ductbank, and utility work, roadwork and trackwork. Traffic entering or leaving the neighbourhood will be diverted to 9 Avenue. The city says signal timing along the route will be monitored and adjusted to help with traffic flow. Residents should expect significant travel delays and are encouraged to plan for 15 minutes or more of extra travel time, depending on the time of day, and to avoid peak travel times if possible. Four traffic lanes will open on 9 Avenue to support better traffic flow during the 12 Avenue closure. The city and Ledcor have briefed emergency services of the closure and have developed an emergency response plan. Pedestrian access through the impacted area will remain, but detours will be in place as construction progresses. Signage will be posted to indicate pedestrian access. When 12 Avenue west reopens later this summer, crews will begin working on 9 Avenue west. The area will see similar closures during construction and traffic will be diverted to 12 Avenue. Ledcor does not anticipate any further closures in the area after this construction season.
