3 motorists charged with stunt driving on Barrie streets

Police in Barrie charged two drivers allegedly clocked speeding at nearly double the posted limit in the city’s south east end on Monday.

According to police, the traffic unit stopped both vehicles in separate incidents for travelling 108 kilometres per hour along Mapleview Drive East - a posted 60 zone.

The offence netted a 31-year-old man from Barrie and a 54-year-old man from North York a stunt driving charge, which carries an immediate 30-day licence suspension and 14 day vehicle impoundment.

Police say a third incident occurred the same day when an officer says a vehicle spotted was racing another. The officer was able to stop one of the vehicles and charged the driver, a 30-year-old man from Barrie, with stunt driving. Police say they were unable to stop the other involved vehicle.

"Speeds this fast on city streets are not only unacceptable, but they are simply dangerous. If you choose to speed at speeds that these drivers were travelling at, as a motorist, you must be prepared to be treated in the same manner if stopped by police," the Barrie Police Service stated. “Please remember that having a driver’s licence is a privilege, and when abused, is a privilege that can be removed.”
