Suspects charged with stunt driving near Parry Sound

One person from Sudbury and another from Lynden, Ont., have been charged with stunt driving after police clocked them driving 172 km/h on Highway 400 near Parry Sound.

The incident took place May 7 around 12:15 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release May 11.

Officers “conducting traffic enforcement observed two vehicles travelling southbound on Highway 400 at high rates of speed while overtaking surrounding traffic in a coordinated manner,” police said.

Travelling 172 km/h

“The two vehicles were observed travelling at 172 km/h in a posted 110 km/h zone. Officers subsequently conducted traffic stops on both vehicles.”

A 19-year-old from Sudbury and a 28-year-old from Lynden have been charged with stunt driving and racing. In addition, the Sudbury suspect was charged with not having proof of insurance.

Both drivers were issued 30-day driver’s licence suspensions, and both vehicles were impounded for 14 days. And both have a July 21 court date in the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound.

“The OPP reminds motorists that excessive speed remains one of the leading contributing factors in serious and fatal motor vehicle collisions and significantly reduces a driver’s ability to react to changing road conditions,” police said.
