Still no official plans for Costco in Middle Sackville, N.S., developer says

For the second time this year, a developer is quashing rumours that a Costco is coming to Middle Sackville, N.S., anytime soon.

Marc Ouellet with Armco Capital Inc. said despite chatter online, there has been little movement on building a Costco in the community.

“We still don’t have the proper zoning and the services aren’t there,” said Ouellet. “We feel strongly in the project in terms of what it would mean for the community.”

In a previous statement, Armco said it has spent 13 years acquiring development rights for land near the Margeson Drive and Highway 101 interchange.

That area is not zoned for large-scale retail spaces and it would require municipal approval for any development.

In a written statement, Mayor Andy Fillmore said he believes Costco is exploring the possibility of opening a third store in the municipality.

“That’s a strong signal that a major business wants to invest here, and now our job is to ensure the site is ready to make that happen,” Fillmore said. “That means extending the service boundary and putting the right zoning in place. If we can move quickly, this site won’t just bring a new retail destination it will also unlock more than 3,500 new residential units and significant commercial space in an important growth area of our municipality.”

In a social media post John Young, councillor for Hammonds Plains-Upper Hammonds Plains-Lucasville-Middle and Upper Sackville, said Costco has not been confirmed for Middle Sackville.

“There are discussions, there will be a future community meeting to discuss and get feedback from the community for the potential possibility of a Costco in Middle Sackville, but there is no confirmation,” Young said.
