N.S. athlete Sarah Mitton wins gold for shot put at Commonwealth Games in Scotland

Nova Scotia athlete Sarah Mitton won gold for women's shot put at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland on Wednesday.

Nova Scotia athlete Sarah Mitton defended her Commonwealth Games women’s shot put title with a winning throw of 19.88 metres on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old from Brooklyn in Queen’s County, N.S., claimed Canada’s 14th gold medal at the games in Glasgow, Scotland.

She told Athletics Canada being able to stand on the podium and be a two-time Commonwealth Games champion is “very special for her.”

“I’m pretty proud,” Mitton told Athletics Canada. “Every time you step into the stadium, there’s a chance that it doesn’t go your way and you do everything in your power to make your dreams come true.”

Mitton represented Canada in the last two Summer Olympics, is a two-time world indoor champion, and the 2023 world silver medalist.

Competitions are running until Sunday.
