Halifax-area residents told to clear storm drains ahead of heavy rain

Special weather statements and rainfall warnings are in effect for parts of the Maritimes. CTV meteorologist Kalin Mitchell has an update in this video.

People living in the Halifax area are being told to prepare for heavy rainfall in the forecast.

The wet weather is expected to begin Thursday evening and continue until Friday evening for some areas.

Halifax Water says surface-level run-off increases the risk of localized flooding, especially if storm drains and catchbasins are blocked with debris.

The utility is encouraging residents to check their storm drains and catchbasins to make sure they are clear.

Customers with driveway culverts should also make sure nothing is blocking the flow of water.

Weather alerts

Special weather statements are currently in effect for Halifax, as well as Lunenburg, Queens and Shelburne counties.

Environment Canada says up to 50 mm is expected, though there could be more in the heaviest showers.

“An approaching low pressure system is expected to bring a period of intense rainfall,” the statement reads.

“Thundershowers may develop over some areas, producing locally heavier rainfall. There is some uncertainty as to where the highest rainfall amounts will occur, but the potential exists for significant totals over some locations along the Atlantic coast.”

Creeks and smaller rivers may also rise quickly and overflow their banks.

Special weather statements are also in effect for northeastern, southwestern and parts of central New Brunswick where up to 45 mm is possible.

People are being told to consider adjusting their travel plans to avoid the most adverse conditions.

Meanwhile, rainfall warnings are in place for coastal Charlotte County, Saint John and County and Fundy National Park.

Up to 60 mm is possible, though more may fall in thundershowers.

“Rainfall rates of 5 to 10 mm per hour are possible over some areas. Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced at times. Rainfall warnings are issued when significant impacts are expected due to rainfall amounts,” the warning reads.

There are currently no weather alerts in place for Prince Edward Island.
