State funeral planned for New Brunswick’s Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell

A state funeral will take place this Friday for Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell, a former lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick.

A state funeral will take place this Friday for a trailblazing doctor, politician and former lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick.

Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell died in Sackville, N.B., on June 17 at the age of 92.

Counsell was also a senator, president of the provincial Literacy Coalition, advocate and Officer of the Order of Canada and Order of New Brunswick.

Her funeral will take place in the Marjorie Young Bell Convocation Hall at Mount Allison University in Sackville at 2 p.m. Friday.

It will be open to the public.

A reception will then follow at the university’s Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts.

“Members of the public wishing to express condolences may do so by signing the condolence book online,” reads a provincial news release.

“Flags at all provincial government buildings have been placed at half-mast until sunset on the day of the funeral.”

The university says parking on campus will be limited during the service.
