Significant rain, freezing rain on tap for parts of the Maritimes

Parts of the Maritimes will start off the week with some rain and freezing rain.

New Brunswick

Much of southwestern and south-central New Brunswick are under a rainfall warning.

Environment Canada said 40 to 60 mm could fall Monday. It said rain, which will be heavy at times, is expected to move into western areas Monday morning and move slowly eastward through the day and into the evening.

The system will then stall over south-central areas Monday evening. The heaviest amounts are expected to be along the Fundy Coast.

The concern with this weather system is flash flooding and water pooling on roads. There could also be flooding in low-lying areas.

On Sunday afternoon, Environment Canada put southeastern New Brunswick under a special weather statement for an extended period of freezing rain. The freezing rain is expected to begin Tuesday afternoon and possible intensify into the evening.

It said warnings may be issued as the system gets closer.

Prince Edward Island

All of Prince Edward Island is under a special weather statement.

Temperatures will be mild on Monday before falling significantly into Tuesday, meaning as the rain moves eastward it could switch over to freezing rain.

Environment Canada said freezing rain could last up to four hours beginning Tuesday morning and possibly continue into the evening.

It said this could result in significant ice accretion on surfaces and utility lines.

Nova Scotia

On Sunday afternoon, Environment Canada added parts of Nova Scotia to the special weather statement.

The areas of Cumberland County North and Cobequid Pass could also see an extended period of freezing rain beginning Tuesday afternoon through to the evening.
