Flood concerns mount in Orillia as crews, volunteers work around the clock

Days of steady rain and rising water levels are raising flooding concerns in parts of Central Ontario, with Orillia now dealing with overflowing lakes and water creeping into neighbourhoods.

The city says crews are actively responding to numerous flooding reports after nearly 60 millimeters of rain fell over the past five days.

Parks Canada says water levels on Lake Simcoe are already above average and only continue to rise. Elevated lake levels are also targeting Lake Couchiching, where some shoreline properties are experiencing severe flooding.

City crews have been working in several areas, pumping water and trying to protect roads and homes.

A self-serve sandbag station has been set up at the Collins Drive Launch Ramp, where residents can fill bags to help protect their homes.

Local volunteers tell CTV News they have been working around the clock, loading and stacking sandbags to help neighbours and affected homeowners in the area.

Resident Dave Frankum says he has spent nearly 10 hours assisting residents in the flood. “I’ve brought my guys from by business and have filled well over 1,000 bags already. With more rain in the forecast, there’s a lot more needed,” says Frankum.

As conditions continue to worsen, some roads have already been closed, including Forest Avenue South between Lankin Boulevard and Victoria Crescent, as well as Cedar Island Road and Davey Drive.

Residents may also notice temporary closures and delays in other areas in Orillia as crews continue to navigate the situation.

The city is encouraging residents to take precautions where possible, like checking sump pumps, clearing drains and gutters and moving valuables to higher ground.

Environment Canada warns an additional 15 to 25 mm of rain is expected to fall over the coming days.
