A five-year-old husky named Missy ended up on her daycare doorstep in Regina after an unsupervised walk from home. On April 13, the staff at Spot’s Place got a surprise when they noticed the canine running across their parking lot on their security camera. “We let Missy in. (The) biggest smile on her face. She was so proud of herself, so happy to be here,” said Mackenzie Hoffman, the front desk lead at Spot’s Place. Kimberly Hrappstead is one of Missy’s owners. She was shocked when got the call and heard what happened. “It’s just miraculous that nothing happened and it was as positive a situation as you could have,” she said. “I certainly don’t condone dogs escaping yards and going out on journeys by themselves, but we are so thankful,” she added. Spot’s Place is located in a strip mall on the service road of Victoria Ave East, an area with heavy traffic. Five days a week, Missy is taken to the dog daycare on foot. Her owner rides by bicycle and they stick to the same route This daily trek is likely how the canine got to her destination safely. “She is very familiar with it. It is second nature to her,” Hoffman said. Missy needed to see the vet and was taking a day off from Spot’s Place. She was in the backyard and squeezed her way under the fence. The walk to the daycare is 10 to 15 minutes. “My husband takes her the same route every time. I’d like to think she maybe took that route and maybe stayed away from the traffic,” Hrappstead said. Spot’s place specializes in dogs, and includes services such as training, grooming, and boarding. Depending on the day, they see upwards of 100 dogs moving in the building. The workers hear many types of stories from dog owners, but Missy’s journey to the facility is a unique one. “Dogs get out, they escape, they run around. I have never had one come back to a specific place. I believe she must feel safe here,” said Jordan Feicht, a rover at Spot’s Place.
