Non-compliances found at 14 N.B. gas stations during first phase of inspections: province

New Brunswick says 14 of 30 inspected gas stations were not up to regulatory code.

New Brunswick’s environment department says the first phase of gas station inspections across the province is nearly complete.

The inspections come after a large diesel spill was discovered at an Irving Oil truck stop on Beardsley Road in Woodstock last December.

Environment Minister Gilles LePage said last month the inspections would be done to confirm regulatory compliance and ensure site owners have the right measures in place for detecting and managing oil spills.

The Department of Environment and Climate Change has completed 30 inspections around the province over the past month.

LePage says non-compliances were seen at 14 sites, causing the department to issue tickets and compliance plans. The next phase of inspections is expected to begin “shortly.”

Remediation activities to clean up the spill continue at the Murray’s Truck Stop location. Efforts include groundwater monitoring and the installation of an on-site system to treat contaminated water.

Off-site potable wells and nearby wetlands were not impacted by the spill. The environment department is investigating the circumstances that led to it.

Irving Oil Ltd., which has been identified as the responsible party for the incident, has previously said it has undertaken a “thorough and extensive” review to prevent future occurrences.
