N.B. police issue warning about use of counterfeit money during online transactions

Police in New Brunswick are warning people about an increase in the use of counterfeit money during in-person transactions arranged through online marketplaces.

The RCMP says reports have been received from people selling on platforms like Kijiji who were given counterfeit cash in exchange for their items.

“While online marketplaces are a convenient way to buy and sell items, they can also be targeted by individuals with criminal intent,” said Cpl. Hans Ouellette in a news release from the New Brunswick RCMP. “We encourage the public to remain vigilant and take precautions when meeting buyers or sellers.”

Police suggest the following tips to help people stay safe during online transactions:

• Inspect cash carefully: Check for security features on bills, such as raised ink, holograms and transparent windows.
• Consider alternative payment methods: Digital payments may reduce risk.
• Trust your instincts: If something or someone seems suspicious, cancel the transaction.

The RCMP is asking anyone who suspects they received counterfeit money to contact their local police detachment and make note of any identifying details about the suspect and circumstances of the transaction.
