B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that closed the Sea to Sky Highway for more than eight hours on Sunday, leaving many stranded in their cars until the early hours of Monday morning. The RCMP says an officer with B.C. Highway Patrol conducting speed enforcement saw two motorcyclists speeding and driving erratically around 5:30 p.m. “The officer left their position along the highway and moments later located one of the motorcyclists who was involved in a collision with a recreational vehicle,” Mounties wrote in a statement. “The female motorcyclist was declared deceased at the scene.” Highway 99 was shut down in both directions near the Deeks Creek Bridge, a few kilometres north of Lions Bay. The highway would not fully reopen until approximately 2 a.m. At 3:25 a.m., DriveBC reported “extremely busy” traffic southbound. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is now probing whether police action or inaction contributed to the woman’s death. As such, the RCMP says it will not be releasing further information about the incident.
