Border agents seize more than 200kg of cannabis in Saint John

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the RCMP seized 218 kilograms of cannabis in a marine container in Saint John, N.B., that was headed to a business in the United Kingdom two months ago.

The CBSA says officers inspected the container following a referral from its export team in Halifax on Sept. 16. The contents of the shipment had been falsely declared as empty plastic bottles, according to a news release.

“During the examination, border services officers detected 16 large cardboard boxes filled with suspected cannabis,” the release reads. “A total of 399 packages of vacuum-sealed cannabis were seized, weighing 218 kilograms.”

The New Brunswick RCMP received the cannabis for further investigation.

The illicit cross-border movement of cannabis comes with a possible prison term of five years under the Customs Act and up to 14 years under the Cannabis Act.
