20-year-old arrested for alleged assault on Saint John police officer

A 20-year-old man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a Saint John police officer last Friday.

Police in Saint John, N.B., have arrested a 20-year-old man after he allegedly assaulted a bystander and an officer.

Officers with the Saint John Police Force responded to a call from someone stating they were a victim of an assault by a male known to them around 12:27 a.m. on Friday.

An officer later found the suspect on the Wall Street overpass with another male.

Police say as the officer approached the suspect to arrest him, he lunged towards the bridge railing. The bystander and officer were able to stop the suspect, but the suspect then tackled the officer and began assaulting them.

The bystander was able to pull the suspect off the officer, and the suspect fled across the overpass, but was quickly taken into custody by other officers, according to police.

Both the officer and bystander sustained injuries in the incident, and police say they are recovering at this time.

The suspect, Sullivan Romhild, appeared in provincial court on Monday for a bail hearing. He has been charged with:

• assaulting a peace officer
• assault causing bodily harm
• attempt to disarm a peace officer
• probation violation
• obstruction of a peace officer

Romhild has been remanded into custody for an assessment and will reappear in court on May 26.
