Doctors warn the importance of vaccines for COVID-19, flu, RSV this season

Experts are encouraging annual COVID-19 vaccines during influenza season.

As the colder months begin approaching doctors are warning about the importance of vaccines.

“Fall is the season when we see respiratory viruses,” Dr. Lisa Barrett, Infectious Disease doctor and scientist told CTV Atlantic’s Jesse Thomas.

Dr. Barrett said viruses seen this time of year can be anything from influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19.

“We are starting to see that we are heading into that season of the year,” Dr. Barrett said.

With cases of the flu and COVID-19 on the rise this time of year, Dr. Barrett said it’s important to start thinking about vaccines.

“Vaccines for COVID, flu and RSV as well as pneumonia,” Dr. Barrett said. “Are very safe.”

In Nova Scotia, COVID-19, RSV and flu vaccine appointments are now available to book online or by phone.

Dr. Barrett noted that Nova Scotia offers vaccines at various locations including mobile clinics, pharmacies and through primary caregivers.

She also noted the importance of certain populations getting vaccinated.

“It is very important, if you have other medical conditions, if you are older and if you are very young or have a problem with your immune system,” Dr. Barrett said. “That you make sure you get your doses this year.”

For elderly people there is also extra strength flu vaccines Dr. Barrett said. She also reminded people living in long term care homes or those who are pregnant, the importance of getting COVID-19 vaccines throughout the year.

Those at a higher risk should also consider getting tested for COVID-19 more frequently.

“It does matter if you’re at high risk, because treatment is available,” she said.

Anyone with difficulty breathing or have a prolonged sickness should seek out urgent or emergency care. However, Dr. Barrett noted that hospitals across the country are being stretched further and further.

“The best thing we can do to prevent that is to get vaccinated,” Dr. Barrett said.
