The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning consumers against consuming various beef products distributed by XL Foods Inc. of Alberta because of possible E. coli contamination.
The affected beef products distributed under the Kirkland Signature, Safeway and Calahoo Meats brands are being voluntarily recalled by the company.
Specific products include Calahoo Meats’ B.B. Burgers distributed in Alberta as well as various ground beef products sold under the Kirkland Signature label distributed nationally from Aug. 30 to Sept. 15.
A number of Safeway products were also recalled including ground beef, beef patties, beef sliders and meatballs. Products listed with best before or freeze dates between Aug. 29 – Sept. 19 and Sept. 9 - Sept. 23 are affected. Safeway meats were distributed to Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia.
Wal-Mart stores in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan have been listed in the report as a distributor of some of these ground beef products.
According to the agency, no reported illnesses have been associated with these products.
The agency is continuing its investigation and working with recall firms and distributors to verify all affected products.
Consumers are being encouraged to contact the store where they purchased these products.
According to the agency, the products containing E. coli may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of these products can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.
Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea.
