Winnipeg high school cancels classes Wednesday due to threat; WPS investigating

A Winnipeg high school is closing Wednesday after allegedly receiving a threat.

A Winnipeg high school has cancelled classes on Wednesday due to a reported threat, the latest school closure related to a threat in recent weeks.

On Tuesday, the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) announced it would be cancelling classes on Wednesday at Windsor Park Collegiate after a “concerning” threat was made against the school.

“LRSD made this decision to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of students and staff,” Christian Michalik, superintendent and CEO of the school division, said in a statement.

In a letter sent to parents in the community, the school division said staff members have been working with Winnipeg police to identify the origin of the threat and interview students.

“Regrettably, despite these efforts, the individual or individuals responsible have not yet been identified,” Michalik wrote.

The letter added that additional security measures are being implemented at the school, including locking all doors moving forward. The dedicated access point will be the west doors near the gym, Michalik wrote. The division will also continue collaborating with police and will have additional divisional staff onsite for the rest of the week for increased supervision and student support.

The division said classes will continue at College Beliveau, which is located near Windsor Park Collegiate. Monitored access to the building at designated entrances will occur.

Winnipeg police confirmed they are investigating the incident.

The threat against Windsor Park Collegiate is the latest received by a Winnipeg school in recent weeks. Threats have been reported against Niji Mahkwa School, St. John’s High School, and Bernie Wolfe School.

A teen was arrested and charged with uttering threats in the Niji Mahkwa School incident, while the other incidents are under investigation.
