A Winnipeg city councillor wants to cut to the chase when it comes to bike lanes on Wellington Crescent.

A Winnipeg city councillor wants to skip a step when it comes to adding a bike lane to Wellington Crescent.

A report before Public Works is recommending the Public Service work with an engineering consultant to bring a temporary bike lane to Wellington between Academy Road and Stradbrook Avenue.

Instead, Coun. Janice Lukes (Waverley West) said she plans on bringing forward a motion requesting the city jump straight to installing a permanent bike lane.

“We got the public consultation report. Seventy-four per cent of people interviewed really wanted to see permanent bike lanes. I know the cycling community wants to see permanent bike lanes. I know it’s a priority in our pedestrian and cycling strategy,” said Lukes.

She notes if made permanent, it would improve safety in the area, allow for smoother traffic flow, enhance the streetscape that makes sense for the area, and deliver long-term value.

“If we make this permanent, that’s also going to solve problems with delivery trucks, with challenges with parking. So, I think it’s going to be a win-win for everyone, for the cyclists. Without a doubt, permanent provides better protection than temporary.”

Lukes said she has spoken with building and business owners in the area and has received a lot of support for a permanent installation.

Calls for a bike lane on the road came in response to a fatal hit-and-run in June 2024. Rob Jenner died in the crash and the cycling community called for more safety measures in the area.

A plan to test bikes lanes along Wellington was approved in July last year.

According to the city, around 12,000 vehicles use Wellington every day.

Lukes’ motion will be discussed on March 4 during the Public Works Committee meeting.
