Section of Trans-Canada Highway reopened after multiple crashes and winter conditions

Manitoba RCMP are responding to multiple crashes on a stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway due to winter conditions.

A section of Trans-Canada Highway reopened on Saturday after winter conditions forced the section to be closed on Friday.

The highway between Headingley and Portage la Prairie reopened Saturday morning after reduced visibility and poor driving conditions forced the closure. Multiple crashes were caused due to the winter conditions on the stretch.

Two multi-vehicle crashes near Oakville happened around 11:20 a.m. on Friday in both eastbound and westbound lanes, Mounties said on Friday. At least five vehicles, including an RCMP vehicle, were involved in one of the crashes.

The collision resulted in a Code Orange Alert—an emergency response to a “mass casualty incident”—being issued for the Portage District General Hospital, according to Southern Health. The alert was cancelled just after 2 p.m.

RCMP said no serious injuries are believed to have occurred.
