As the Parkland Region in Manitoba is dealing with the aftermath of a tornado that ripped through the area Sunday night, spots just over the Ontario border are being warned of the possibility of a storm creating a tornado. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued an orange tornado watch for multiple areas in northwestern Ontario, including areas that encompass Dryden, Fort Frances, Shebandowan, Ignace, Kenora, Seine River Village, and Sioux Narrows. “Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes,” the ECCC alert reads. “Strong winds, large hail and heavy rain are also possible.” ECCC said wind gusts are possible up to 110 km/h, with hail up to the size of tennis balls, as well as 50 to 100 mm of rain. “Significant damage or destruction to infrastructure, homes and the natural environment is possible.” The watch is in effect for Monday afternoon and evening. If a tornado develops, people are told to go inside to the lowest floor and stay away from any outside walls or windows. If people are outside and unable to get indoors, they are told to lie in a low spot and protect their head from debris. “Be prepared for severe weather. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take cover immediately.”
