There was a joint rescue operation involving U.S. and Canadian emergency crews after a Kenmore Air seaplane crashed in Washington’s San Juan Islands on Thursday. The company confirmed the incident happened on a flight from Lake Union to Roche Harbour. Videos posted on social media show the seaplane—a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter—banking to one side as it makes an emergency landing near a number of sailboats in Shallow Bay. The aircraft eventually moves out of view before a loud crash is heard, followed by gasps from onlookers. Additional videos show occupants escaping the wreckage, which at some point burst into flames while resting against the rocks on Sucia Island. Kenmore Air told CTV News there were 10 passengers on board, plus the pilot, and that it appears everyone survived. Some on board were seriously injured, however, including one who was reported to be in critical condition. “There are multiple patients with injuries ranging from head injuries to broken bones and lacerations,” the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved and their loved ones.” The U.S. Coast Guard said it was joined in the rescue effort by the Canadian Coast Guard, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, B.C. Air Ambulance, Life Flight and San Juan County emergency responders. “Numerous Good Samaritan vessels” also rushed to help after an emergency broadcast was sent to mariners in the area, the USCG said in a statement. “Coast Guard environmental response personnel have been notified and are co-ordinating with partner agencies to assess any potential environmental impacts.” The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were also notified. It’s unclear what caused the seaplane’s emergency landing, and Kenmore Air said it would not be speculating before the details are confirmed. In a news release, the company confirmed all flights were cancelled Friday to focus on “supporting the passengers, pilot, families, employees and emergency response efforts.” “We are grateful that everyone aboard has been accounted for, and our immediate focus is ensuring our passengers and pilot receive the care and support they need,” CEO David Gudgel said in a statement. “Kenmore Air is fully co-operating with the investigating authorities, and we will continue providing verified information as it becomes available.” Passengers affected by the cancellations can contact the company’s reservations line at 1-866-435-9524.
