It was a smoky day in southern Alberta on Thursday as Calgary, Airdrie and the surrounding areas saw some of the poorest air quality in the country. Calgary shot to the top of the Air Quality Health Index on Thursday afternoon, arriving at a ranking of 10 by 7 p.m. That rating is from wildfire smoke blowing in from British and Washington state. It will take some time for this smoke to work its way out, so expect it to range from high to moderate throughout Friday and Saturday. The AQHI level will likely still be high in Calgary Friday morning. It might work its way down to moderate for part of the day, but there is a good chance it will get worse again around the supper hours. The forecast high for Friday is 32 C, but if we get the smoke that is expected, we won’t hit that number. There is a small chance of a brief shower in the city again in the afternoon. We are currently in a two-week hot stretch, with most days in the 30-degree range. While I think we can all agree that the smoke is awful, Matt Melnyk shows it can, however, help create some beautiful photos.
