Team Canada soccer match in Winnipeg nearly breaks attendance record

Winnipeggers nearly broke an attendance record at one of the most high-profile soccer games ever to be played in our city.

The Canadian women's soccer team squared off against the American women in an exhibition game for next year's World Cup. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

28,255 fans showed up to cheer, the second largest crowd ever for an international women's soccer friendly match in Canada.

For Canadian midfielder and Olympic bronze medalist, Desiree Scott, the game was a special one as Winnipeg is her hometown.

It was also the first time Scott’s mom, Charlene Gusberti, got to see her Olympian daughter play live.

She said she's been waiting months for this game.

"It's a dream come true for us,” said Gusberti. “Desiree and I have always wanted to connect somehow. I don't fly very far, more than three hours any direction, and with my foster kids I really can't travel that much."

Gusberti said that the support from fans was amazing.

"They've come all out to support her and the team and there's a lot of people here just for my Desiree, and isn't that wonderful? Yeah, it's amazing," said Gusberti.

Scott also enjoyed the crowd.

"They're just so proud of me and I'm happy they were in the stands tonight and I definitely played for them and yeah I fully enjoyed it," said Scott.

Soccer fan Daniel Carreria enjoyed the game too, despite the unseasonably low temperatures.

"It's a cold day but there’s a lot of people out and they're enjoying themselves, you know it's a good time," said Carreria.

The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup starts in Canada in June.

Winnipeg will share hosting duties with Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton next summer for the Women's World Cup. Team Canada is not scheduled to play here.
