Most of southern Manitoba—including the City of Winnipeg—is under an orange watch for severe thunderstorms late Monday afternoon. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued the alert just after 3:20 p.m. as a trough of low pressure moves across the southern half of the province. The alert stretches from the Manitoba-Ontario border in the east, as far north as Grand Rapids, south to the Canada-U.S. border, and east to the Saskatchewan border near Swan River. “Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain,” ECCC wrote. The weather agency warns that wind gusts could hit 110 km/h, while ping pong ball-sized hail could be in the cards. ECCC also notes isolated tornado threats are possible with any storm that develops.
