Potential illegal crossing near Emerson under investigation

A Winnipeg man has been charged and four migrants have been arrested in connection to what RCMP are saying was an illegal border crossing

A Winnipeg man was charged at the end of last year in connection with a potential illegal border crossing near Emerson, Man.

The incident began around 9 p.m. on Dec. 5, 2025, when officers with the RCMP’s integrated border enforcement team (IBET) detected a migrant crossing about 10 kilometres west of Emerson, near the RM of Montcalm.

According to RCMP, officers spotted a vehicle while conducting patrols; however, the driver sped away at the sight of police. Officers were eventually able to stop the vehicle, which led to the driver’s arrest.

Mounties said four migrants were found near the vehicle’s location and were arrested before being sent to the Canadian Border Services Agency in Emerson.

The 31-year-old Winnipeg man who was driving the car has been charged with a counselling offence contrary to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in court today.
