Permanent bike lane plan on Wellington moves forward

A Winnipeg city councillor wants to cut to the chase when it comes to bike lanes on Wellington Crescent.

The motion to build a permanent bike lane on a section of Wellington Crescent has taken a step forward.

On Wednesday, the public works committee voted 3-1 in favour of the motion after shooting down a similar report that would see the installation of a temporary bike lane.

If the motion, which was put forward by Coun. Janice Lukes, is passed by city council, Winnipeg’s public service will work with an engineering consultant to design a permanent bike lane on Wellington between Academy Road and Stradbrook Avenue.

Construction would take place in spring-summer of 2027 and cost around $5.5 million.

Lukes previously told CTV News that a permanent bike lane would improve safety and allow for a smoother traffic flow.

She said she has spoken to building and business owners in the area and has received a lot of support for the plan.

Calls for a bike lane on Wellington began in 2024 following a fatal hit-and-run.

The executive policy committee will discuss the plan at its next meeting.
