Officers advise public to guard against thieves targeting trailers

Police are advising people to lock up their trailers after two thefts in the last two days.

On Tuesday, Jennifer Mlodzinski found her boat abandoned in a field after it was stolen along with her trailer. On Monday morning, Karen Emberly woke up to find her 1977 yellow Boler trailer missing from her driveway.

Emberly bought the trailer in 2012.

“I was diagnosed in 2012 with breast cancer so just prior to my surgery, I purchased it and it seems like fate at the time because I purchased it from a woman who also has cancer,” she said.

Police have two 16-year-old males in custody in relation to the boat trailer theft but said these types of thefts aren’t uncommon. They said these are crimes of opportunity and owners should take precautions.

Lexiss Jefferson from Dakota Lock & Safe Ltd. said one of the best methods of prevention if your trailer isn’t hooked up to your car is a universal coupler lock.

She said it will prevent anybody from putting a hitch on it and taking off with the trailer.
