Second teen arrested in GTA synagogue shootings

A 17-year-old boy from Waterloo has been arrested and charged in relation with the two synagogue shootings in North York and Vaughan earlier this year.

A second teenage suspect has been arrested in connection with a pair of shootings at synagogues in Toronto and Vaughan in March.

The shootings were separated by only 20 minutes and targeted the Beth Avraham Yosef of Toronto synagogue in Thornhill and a synagogue near Bathurst Street and Glencairn Avenue in Toronto in the late hours of March 6 and the early hours of March 7.

No injuries were reported as a result of either incident, though police say that evidence of gunfire was located at the entrance of both synagogues.

Police also noted that there were two people inside the Thornhill synagogue when gunfire erupted.

Earlier this month, police announced that they had arrested a male who was 17 at the time of the shootings and charged him with a total of nine offences.

His arrest came after police obtained temporary judicial authorization to to release a surveillance camera image of a suspect.

However, at the time, investigators said that they did not believe the teen acted alone.

In a news release on Friday, York Regional Police confirmed that a second suspect - a 17-year-old male, was taken into custody in Waterloo earlier this week.

The teen, who cannot be named under the terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is facing six charges, including two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm.

Police say that their investigation into the shootings remains ongoing.
