New Winnipeg basketball court named to honour Chad Posthumus

A basketball court was officially named to honour Chad Posthumus, who passed away in 2024.

A new basketball court in Winnipeg now bears the name of a local professional player who passed away in 2024.

On Friday, members of Chad Posthumus’ family were on hand to officially open the basketball courts at the Gateway Recreation Centre, which will now be known as the Chad Posthumus Memorial Court.

“Chad would have been so proud to see that his community was growing the sport of basketball and providing opportunities for everyone to participate in the sport that he loved so dearly,” his mother Diana said during the naming ceremony.

Chad, who played professional basketball for 10 years, got his start playing basketball at the recreation centre. He was the first captain of the Winnipeg Sea Bears.

Chad died in November 2024 at the age of 33 from a brain aneurysm.

Diana said Chad was an advocate for accessible sports facilities and would often show up at a basketball court to play with local kids.

“Chad was an advocate for creating outdoor courts, working together with the Sea Bears and Buckets and Borders to create accessible spaces for all to enjoy,” she said. “He loved playing outdoors, and he felt it was a great starting point for those individuals just learning to play, or for those who wanted to play some pickup ball with some experienced players.”

The Chad Posthumus Memorial Court is home to 13 different community basketball teams made up of 150 kids.
