New garbage and recycling schedule will impact most Winnipeggers

Winnipeggers brace for changes to garbage pick-up Jeff Keele reports on changes to weekly garbage pick-up and the mixed emotions Winnipeggers are feeling.

Starting next month more than half of Winnipeg homeowners will have a new garbage and recycling day.

59% of people will be impacted by the change starting October 1.

The city says the schedule alterations are being done as two new contractors takeover collection. Areas more prone to arson will see pickups moved to Thursday or Friday so carts are put away before the weekend.

The new contracts cost $24 million dollars a year, a $6 million dollar jump in price. Homeowners are currently paying an annual $56 dollars waste diversion fee.

Water and Waste Chair Brian Mayes said there are a number of options that could be on the table to cover the increase.

“Some will say put it on the household fee, some will say put it on the property tax that has very different implications, some would say cut other services to pay for it we will have to have that debate in the budget,” Mayes said.

All homeowners with garbage and recycling service will receive a mail out this month about the changes.
