There is a new baby animal frolicking around at the Assiniboine Park and Zoo. The zoo announced the arrival of a new baby pronghorn that is six weeks old. It has been a whirlwind life for the new girl. The zoo said she was originally found in Alberta entangled in a fence and her mom was nowhere to be found. She had a large injury on her back legs and because she didn’t have a mother, she couldn’t be released back into the wild. “She was, however, feisty and mobile,” the zoo said in a social media post. The baby pronghorn was first taken to the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation and then to the Calgary Zoo, where she underwent surgery and long-term care. Once she was healed, she was taken to Winnipeg so she could be integrated into the pronghorn herd at the Assiniboine Park and Zoo. “After being assessed by our veterinary team at Assiniboine Park Zoo’s Animal Health Centre, gradual introductions began with our resident adult female pronghorn, Tilly and Fernie. Introductions are slow and thoughtfully planned to prioritize the safety and comfort of every animal.” The zoo said she has since started to settle in and has started to transition to solid food. “She is adorable, curious, and we can’t wait for you to meet her!” Pronghorns are found in Saskatchewan and Alberta in Canada and are considered the fastest land mammal in North America. A name for the latest addition has not been chosen just yet, as the zoo said it is still considering options.
