Nearly $2M to fund Winnipeg community centre renovations

The City of Winnipeg is handing out grants totalling nearly $2 million to allow 24 community centres complete renovations and repairs.

Two dozen of the City of Winnipeg’s community centres will soon be getting renovations – thanks to the help of nearly $2 million in grants.

On Tuesday, the city announced 24 recipients of its community centre renovation grant program (CCRGP). This includes Assiniboia West, Bord-Aire, Deer Lodge, Garden City, North Kildonan, Riverview, South Transcona and Weston community centres.

“Our goal as a council and as a city is to ensure that these community centres continue to be vibrant hubs for socializing, recreation and connection throughout the community,” Mayor Scott Gillingham said Tuesday at the Tyndall Park Community Centre. “Community centres are where the kids play sports, learn activities, make friends and build confidence, where families gather, where seniors stay active and where communities come together.”

According to the city, the grants total more than $1.8 million, with community centres receiving between $14,000 and $100,000 depending on the project.

Renovations include kitchen remodels, rink replacements, lighting upgrades and bathroom upgrades.

“The goal is simple; to ensure that these centres remain accessible, safe and ready to serve their community,” Gillingham said.

The CCRGP covers up to 100 per cent of eligible costs with a maximum of $100,000. Since the program began in 2012, over $20.3 million has been given to community centres for renovations.
